Setting plays an essential role in literature, in some stories it provides the main backdrop for the story. In Blood of the Martyrs setting as a whole is used to identify the main character and set the tone of the story. The specific setting element of Malzius's glasses is used to symbolize the way Malzius sees his own life through his ideals.
The way Malzius uses his glasses to make his vision clearer, represents the way he uses his ideals to view his life. This element has an important function in organizing the ideals of Malzius and his ideals of his own life. In the beginning of the story, Malzius clings to his glasses and has a great fear of losing them, and in turn losing his clear vision. This represents the way Malzius clings to his belief that his life has value, and too lose it for nothing would be a waste. At the beginning he is unable to recognize that losing his life for a cause has more value than keeping it for selfish purposes. Malzius is also unable to recognize that although his glasses mean a lot to him, they do not affect his situation overall.
Malzius's fear that his glasses will be lost foreshadows the fact that he too will experience the loss of his ideal he has of his own life. His glasses, and the nightmare he has about them, are used to paint a physical picture of Malzius's fear of losing his ideal and being left to view the world on his own.
When Malzius's glasses brake Malzius is unable to view anything clearly. This correspond to the way Malzius confront his fate and decides that the truth is more important that his own life, therefore pushing away his idealistic view that he doesn't need anymore. When Malzius's glasses barke he is not upset because he no longer needs them, he saw all he needed too see, so too he no longer needs to rely on his ideals to view his own life.

Through symbolism and foreshadowing Malzius' glasses represent the setting. This helped the overall purpose of the story by...(fill in the blank)

On another note your topic paragraph doesn't fit too well with the whole glasses idea in the body paragraphs. I don't know how glasses can be a setting for the story....

On yet another note, you spelled the following words wrong:
*brake --- break
*Malzius's --- Malzius'

I hope this helped some. I never was too good at writing conclusions.
