Eye Injury? My pony was ducking for my grass and I went to thwap his shoulder with my crop to save my shoulder socket. I tripped, he moved, and I ended up hitting him in the eye. :( My husband said it just glanced him.
My pony teared up for about a minute. I flushed his eye with saline and there is no swelling, redness nor has there been any tearing up since the initial tears (and I mean tears as in cry not as in rip). It looks like he may have a scratch on his nictitating membrane.
Obviously I need to have the vet out, but can I wait a day or two or should I wake her up this late? Has anyone had experience with this?
Do all eye injuries lead to eye ulcers?
I already feel like horse person of the year, so I don't need any snarky answers. Thanks.

Call the vet in the morning. Your horse is probably fine.

I would think that it would probably be okay to wait until the vet is open to call her and have her come out...if the eye is not swollen and doesn't seem to be bothering your pony then it should be alright to wait. If you are just very concerned about it and want the vets opinion, call her office and get her emergency contact number. You can call and ask her and see what she thinks before you just call and tell her she needs to come out immediately. This way you are saved the enormous amount of money from a midnight visit!! But like I said, if you are very uncomfortable with waiting then call! If you feel like it will be alright, then it probably will be to wait.
Good luck and I hope your pony is alright!
Don't beat yourself up about it...accidents happen! In fact, horses are very accident prone!

It doesn't automatically mean he has an ulcer.
How does he seem now? It's painful, so he would be showing signs that something is wrong.
Don't wake the vet. You can wait for regular business hours.
The saline rinse did a lot to prevent infection, and the vet will probably give you meds just to be safe.
Do have the eye tested. Even if he seems OK, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Eye injuries can turn nasty very quickly from just a glancing incident. Bacteria and fungi quickly start to grow and then there are problems, damage and it gets expensive. Call the vet in the morning and have them come out tomorrow to check on it. It may just need some Panalog but it's better to be safe than sorry. One thing I never mess with is eyes.
By the way, where I board my horse, they had a mare turned out and she caught her eye very slightly, bit teary but nothing obvious. They are not even sure what she did - anyway fungi got into it (they waited about 5 days before calling the vet as it didn't seem a big deal) and she was inside for 6 weeks while it was treated. Don't feel bad, accidents happen to all of us. :-)

you can wait till morning to call, if your pony let you flush his eye he's not in a huge amount of pain! Not all eye injuries lead to ulcers, but if you think he's scratched his eye, do be sure to have the vet come take a look tomorrow.
