Why do people overrate Larry Bird and Magic Johnson?People talk about these guys being top 5 players all time, to me thats overrating them ( especially Bird).
Larry Bird:
He was an underrated passer, but he is highly overrated in other areas.
- In today's era Larry Bird = Keith Van Horn+ passing
-Horrible defender, defensive Liability
-Terrible mechanic on his jump shot ,very unfundamental release, ugly shot
-Slow, weak player
-Only managed to win 3 rings (Yet people say 80s celtics were best team ever)
-3 MVPs in a row (Yet would he even be a top 5 player in today's NBA)
Shaquille O'neal (Most dominant Center ever): 1 MVP
Kobe Bryant (Most dominant perimeter player ever) : 1 MVP
Lebron James (Best SF all time): 0 MVP
Magic Johnson:
Magic is the best passer and arguably the best point guard ever. - he had some of the best court vision. But overall, he is mad overrated.
-Terrible defensively, could not guard quick point guards
-0 All Defensive teams
-No jumpshot at all, 3 point or midrange shot
-Lost in finals 4 times with Kareem/Worthy
- Why is Kobe discredited for winning 3 rings with best Center in the NBA, but Magic is not?
Why do people overlook their shortcomings and their weaknesses. Is it the whole "rivalry" thing and all the footage shown of them on ESPN, NBATV? Why do people overrate them?
Why is Kobe a choker for losing twice in finals? Yet Magic losing 4 times in Finals and Bird losing 2 times in finals seems to be disregarded?
NBA FINALS
Magic 5-9 , retired
Bird 3-5 , retired
Kobe 3-5 (With best team in NBA and 8 more years left in his career)
Why does no one care that both Magic and Bird were horrible defenders?
Bird and Magic Combined: 1 All-Defensive team.
Kobe: 8 All-Defensive teams
How does in anyone in their right mind put Bird and Magic ahead of DOMINANT player like Shaq and Kobe who have raised the boundaries of the sport and constitued rule changes through their dominance??
Offensively players like Kobe and Shaq are just way more dominant and way better than those guys too. Heck even Lebron is better than both of them.
Larry Bird is not even close to being as good as Kobe
Most overrated ever.
Larry Bird = overrated by media, so sad. MOAT most overrated all time.
in today's era Bird = Keith Van Horn

Keith van Horn was one of many "next Larry Birds". He never came close, obviously.
BIrd was all defense 3 years in a row. wtf are you talking about?
So what if Magic couldn't guard "quick point guards"? He more than made up for it on the offensive end. Kobe's never been able to guard Manu Ginobli when Ginobli's been healthy..
The teams that Shaq & Kobe beat in the finals were a joke. The 76ers were a one man team in a weak Eastern Conference. The Pacers had Rik Smits at center, a joke. And the Nets had Todd MacCulloch at center...are you kidding me??? Each of those teams had one HOFer...the Lakers had two. In the 80s, the teams that won had at least 4 players of HOF quality. A team with two HOFers like Shaq/Kobe or Jordan/Pippen, wouldn't even make the finals.
You wanna talk about a current all star point guard who can't shoot? Ever hear of Jason Kidd? A .402 career shooter, that's the lowest of any player (except Vernon Maxwell) since the inception of the shot clock. And people talk about him as a HOFer.
Magic and Bird got better every year. Each season, they brought something new to their game that they didn't have before. You never saw them play, so you wouldn't know anything about that.
Magic and Bird dominated a league of men, not boys. The NBA was not overrun with high school players who had no idea how to play the game of basketball.
No one ever said that 80s Celtics were the best team ever. The Lakers were the team of the 80s... you're an idiot.
The Lakers of Shaq and Kobe won 3 titles in a row with two hall of famers... that's evidence of how WEAK the NBA was, not how strong... same with Jordan and Pippen.
The Lakers had 4 HOFers during their run in the 80s...the Celtics had 4 as well, plus Dennis Johnson whose career was of HOF quality.
Of course, you're probably impressed with Tracy McGrady.
Rule changes??? for Kobe??? Like what?
Yeah, they made a rule for Shaq, saying that you'll pay a penalty if you foul a lousy free throw shooter, but that rule wasn't put in because of Shaq's dominance, it was put in because of his ineptitude at the FT line. If he could shoot FTs, the rule would never have been adopted. To try to say thats' a point in favor of Shaq is beyond ludicrous. The rule was put in to try to hide Shaq's weaknesses, not control his strengths.
btw, Bird was a 3 time all defensive player... Lebron has yet to make ANY all defensive team. Weak defense?
wft would you know about mechanics on a jump shot? How'd that serve Ray Allen all these years before he teamed up with Garnett and Pierce? Reggie Miller also had poor "mechanics" on his jump shot, but so what? They went in.
DId any of Bird or Magics teams ever have a losing record? No. Kobe's has. Lebron's has.
Career FG percentages:
Magic: 52.0%
Bird: 49.6%
Lebron: 47.0%
Kobe: 45.5%
Shot selection, anyone? Intelligence, anyone?
Both Bird and Magic would be, by far, the best players in the NBA today. Has to do with a little thing known as basketball IQ.
Larry Bird is the best forward of all time, power or small.
Over the last 10 years, Shaq plays about 6 games a year against HOF centers, if that... the rest of the time, he gets the night off. The fact that Kwame Brown has lasted 8 years in the NBA shows how pathetically weak the league is at the center position.
Even the '83 76ers had four players of HOF quality, as did the 89 Pistons (you can look it up...the Pistons wiped out the Jordan/Pippen Bulls three years in a row).
Bird took a Celtics team that won 29 games in 1979 and led them to 61 wins as a rookie. Lebron was 35-47 as a rookie, in a watered down league.
Magic/Bird - 6 MVPs, 5 Finals MVPs
Kobe/Lebron - 2 MVPs (assuming one of them wins it this year), Zero finals MVPs.
Lebron also helped embarrass the USA with a Bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. Only reason he won a gold last year was because of Kobe.
Magic/Bird - solid gold. Greatest team ever, 1992.
