What all should be included in an eye exam at age 50 by an optomitrist? ?As a 50 year old female I am wondering what all should be checked now during my yearly exam. I have a history of breast cancer treated with chemotherapy and radiation. My father has a history of macular degeneration. Should my eyes be dilated?

My optometrist usually asks me whether I am taking any medicines or suffering from any conditions before she checks my eyes. She also asks whether there is a family history of certain health problems. Just let them know if they don't ask.

Yes, your eyes should be dilated. It's best to have it done every year. This enables the doctor to look at the total health of your eye and is the best way of preventing eye diseases. The earlier it's found, the more treatable it is. I hope it's okay if I give you a tip, please get some polarized sunglasses. These protect your eyes from UV and will help prevent any more damage, and can maybe save you from getting macular degeneration. I'm not a doctor, so I can't say what should all be included, as far as I know you'll get a thorough exam like everyone else. You should have a depth perception test, color vision test, auto refraction, tenometry (glaucoma test). Those are all pretests done by the Opticians. The rest the doctor will do. That I don't know because I'm not a doctor. Hope this helps.
