An Optometrist is actually a doctor of optometry (O.D.s) They have to complete four years of post-graduate optometry school. Optometrists examine eyes for both vision and health problems, prescribe glasses, and fit contact lenses. They can prescribe many eye medications and often participate in pre- and post-operative care.
An Ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (M.D.s) that specializes in eyes. They perform eye examinations, treat disease, and perform surgery; some also specialize in contact lenses.

a specialist in optometry; an independent primary health care provider who examines the eyes to evaluate health and visual abilities, diagnoses diseases and other conditions of the eye and visual apparatus, and provides necessary treatment such as eyeglasses, contact lenses, vision therapy, and low vision aids; optometrists may also perform certain surgical procedures.
