Help! What's the name of this book? Blind girl and seeing-eye-wolf meet monk, go on quest! My post was ignored last time. I'm trying again.

I'm trying to figure out the title of a book I read several years
ago, probably (between 1996 and 2003). It was young adult (or perhaps even children's) fiction/fantasy, it was under 400 pages. I also remember it being the first in a series (Not TOTALLY sure!)

The book begins with a young woman living alone in a cottage,
growing her own food and living as a hermit. In her youth her home was attacked by bandits. As a result of the bandit raid, her family was killed, and the girl lost her vision. As she learns to cope with her blindness, her body begins to use magic to give her a somewhat reliable type of "magical sight". She is followed by a seeing eye dog/wolf of sorts (his name might be Cloud?) For the rest of her childhood, she grows vegetables in her garden, cares for the animals around her house, and lives as a hermit. But her life is changed when a young monk visits her. He reveals that she has magic and that she must come with him on a journey to save the kingdom (presumably from some evil force). Through the journey she turns from a shy, withdrawn girl to strong magician, able to defend herself and her monk friend.

I don't remember much about the sequel, except that, at one point, she ends up in a cave, and the evil people try to take control of the monk and ruin the quest.

Please, I REALLY want to read this book again- I remember LOVING it as a kid, but I can't remember any character names, place names, or anything of any use. I've been looking for four months now, and nobody has the slightest clue. If you know any book that sounds vaguely like this one, please make a guess! Any help is greatly appreciated.
