Optician or ophthalmic assistant?I want to take classes for one of these but I'm not sure which one. I've done a little bit of research and being an ophthalmic assistant seems more appling to me than being an optician. But at my school the optician program seems more legit because it prepares me to take the national exam and also allows me to do an externship. But the opthalmic program says nothing about any kind of exam or certification. I heard that school isn't always required for either of these jobs, but I'd still like to have some typr of certification.
Here is the link to the website with the info on it, if anyone wants to see it. Scroll all the way to the bottom for the vision programs section.

Which is a better career? And if you're either one of these, do you like your job? How much schooling did you have?

If you like fitting people glasses and advising them about how to look after glasses and giving them basic eye information then go for opticianary, if you would like to be someone ASSISTANT then go for ophthalmic dispensing, i would personally go for opticianary because i am not an assistant to anyone and would never want to be but it is your choice in the end that counts.
Good luck

I would definitely go for the optician program. Once you have passed the national exam and completed your externship you will have more options than you would if you just took an ophthalmic assistant course. If you decide you'd like to be an ophthalmic assistant, you will be better qualified than most applicants. You can always take additional courses that are offered for ophthalmic assistant.

I am an ophthalmic assistant. I love my job. It is basically a nurse specifically for the eye. If you choose this career you can become certified through JCAHPO. It is a test that you get mailed to you and you mail it back. If you pass that then you take a test at a testing location. It is the first of 7 ranks. If you do it long enough, enjoy it and develop a passion for it, you can be more skilled than an optometrist
